A CLOSER LOOK AT A GREAT SONG
By Dennis R. Smith

One of the great songs of the church and one with a biblical theme is the song “I love thy Kingdom, Lord” by A. B. Everett and Timothy Dwight. The title itself should be enough to open our minds and our hearts with a sense of fairness and cause us to ask why?   Do we really love it because it is “the house of Thine abode and is the pillar and ground of the truth” (1st Tim. 3:15)? Do we love it because it is “the church our blest Redeemer saved with his own precious blood” (Acts 20:28)?   Is she (the church-kingdom) “dear as the apple of Thine eye (meaning the Lord’s eye)?” Do we love her enough to “let our tears fall...and...for her our prayers to ascend?” Do we love it enough to confess that “Jesus (is that) friend divine ...and...Our Savior and our King?”   Finally, do we fully understand that it (she) is, in fact, “the brighter bliss of heaven?” With  these thoughts let us examine ourselves (2nd Cor. 13:5) and seriously consider if there are other reasons why we attend (or not attend) the church regularly. Do we enjoy the fellowship (Acts 2:42) offered by the church? As you can see that’s a good scriptural answer also. Do we count it a “win-win” situation because we are spiritually exalted by the opportunity we have to give our Lord time, talents and money as He gives back to us the Blessed Assurance which we vitally need daily? Another thing: do we love her for “Her sweet communion and solemn vows, Her hymns of love and praise?” I would hope so!
