What Can be Said about “Vain Repetitions”
Dennis R. Smith
The words “vain repetitions” were used by our Lord prior to giving what so often has been called “The Lord’s Prayer” (Matt. 6:7-13). We must not ever condemn anyone for the way they pray or the amount of times in the prayer that they might repeat themselves. Jesus repeated himself three times in his prayer of Matthew 26:44. This being the case may I sugges some things about how to pray. First of all, understand that just saying certain words however eloquently (or long) they may flow does not constitute a better chance of our Lord’s hearing that prayer. The condition of one’s heart as he approaches the throne of God should be the prime prerequisite to all our prayers. Keep in mind that God’s ears are always open to the petitions of the righteous (1
st
Pet. 3:12). It’s only natural that when we pray the “public prayer” that we are concerned with what our audience thinks or might say. Remember they so listen in order to say “Amen” or not (1
st
Cor. 14:16). This being the case, especially when we know in advance of this privilege, one needs to give much thought to what is needed to be said in that prayer. Current events which might come to bear upon the church at the present time are always in order. The sick and bereaved are also in order as well as the overall service in which we are engaged. Most assuredly the prayer for the speaker should be included. But most of all, the seriousness and solemnity of the occasion is most important. Amen?
