Like Dirt In The Streets
Being an old Western Movies buff I remember the last words of one of my favorite shows in which everyone was taking great risks in their effort to obtain gold from an area mine. After much difficulty and loss of life, the two stars were standing as silhouettes against the setting sun and uttered these words: “If the whole world was made of gold, there would be some who would die for a handful of dirt.” I have thought about these words as the years went by. What better way to express how the world rushes on to grab hold of as much wealth as it can and will go to all ends in an effort to obtain it. The danger of this attitude breeds contempt, envy and “covetousness, which is idolatry” (Col. 3:5). Surely we all know that “the love of money is the root of all evil” (1st Tim. 6:10). In contrast to the lust for gold the psalmist reminds us that “The law of the Lord is perfect......more to be desired than gold, Yea, than much fine gold” (Psa. 19:7-10). In the 18th psalm the writer informs us that the word of God is able to sustain us to the extent that the Lord is able to cast our enemies “out like dirt in the streets” (Psa. 18:42). Point of fact: If the world would put forth the same effort to live by God’s Word as it does in searching for wealth, a great part of our problems would be swept into the streets like dirt. May we focus our attention where the real wealth is!
