First Principles Leading to True Happiness

By Dennis R. Smith

The studious biblical  scholar knows full well that the New Testament informs us that the first principles which lead to salvation lie in the obedience of him who is the author of our salvation (Heb. 5:9).  A few verses later (5:12 and 6:1) they are called “the first principles.”   Jesus, in laying down instructions concerning these first principles, informs us to “seek first the kingdom of God” (Matt. 6:33).  These principles are easy to understand.  They are not complicated:  Faith, confession of Christ, repentance and baptism for remission of our sins (Heb. 11:6; Matt. 10:32; Luke 13:3,5; Gal. 3:26-27; Acts 2:38).  While these are the real first principles, there are others of equal simplicity which will lead us to true happiness in this life and also eternal life in heaven.   Consider these: (a) The Golden Rule  (Luke 6:31).  (b) The Blessedness of Giving   (Acts 20:35).   (c) The Royal Law (James 2:8 - Matt. 22:39).  Last, but not least - (d) The Controlled Tongue (James 3:5-10).  While the things mentioned here may seem old fashioned to some, yet those who have a lifetime history of obedience to these principles can witness to their importance and their lives stand as a memorial to their authenticity.  Have vision my friends and remember “he that keepeth the law, happy is he” (Prov. 29:18). Always take FIRST THINGS -  FIRST!
