SAVED FROM WHAT?

By Dennis R. Smith

World tragedies such as the horrible earthquake which struck Haiti have brought to our attention just how brief life can be. Also it reminds us of the joy which can come to families when a rescue from the fallen rubble has been made. At this point may I remind you of the words of Jesus in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Since there are two parts to mankind - the physical and the spiritual - we need to make the same effort to save the spiritual as we do the physical.   It is the spiritual (soul) which will live on in eternity with God if that person has lived in harmony with the teachings of the Almighty. Jesus came "to seek and save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). He offers to the world a salvation that is full and free. It is called the gospel and it is that which saves (1st Cor. 15:1-2). When the gospel is taught in its simplicity and completeness and when one responds to that teaching, the greatest salvation known to man takes place. Faith, repentence, confession of Christ as God's Son, and baptism for the forgiveness of sins constitues obedience to  the gospel and rescues us from the debris of sin. . How wonderful it would be if all would make equal efforts to save lost souls as we do to rescue the physical body.
